San Francisco Pride Day TripAs a member of a diversity program for a Fortune 500 company, I attend many philanthropic events. Most are educational and informative as to the mission of the organization, their goals, and projects. None, however, have I found to be as enlightening to the culture of an entire group as a recent fundraiser I attended aboard a San Francisco charter bus. The event consisted of a day long trip to "gay-friendly" attraction in and around greater San Francisco. Affectionately, if not officially, coined the "Gay Day Trip" we embarked on our journey into the sites, recreational areas, entertainment venues and shopping districts that the LGBT community frequent and support. Our bus, festively attired in a rainbow "wrap", bumping some heavy Techno beats, with drag fashion shows on the ceiling mounted monitors, and serving beverages appropriately sporting a splash of Mount Gay Rum (Barbados), tooled down the road to our first destination with more than our share of curious onlookers. I couldn't help but speculate, on this warm summer day, that many were tourist that may assume that this is normal for a San Francisco charter bus. Our first stop was tiny Baker Beach in the Seacliff area. Boasting phenomenal views of the iconic Golden Gate Bridge, as well as the naked human form, Baker Beach is "clothing optional". Dolores Park, a sun-drenched perch above the city, was our next stop. Favored by sun lovers and devotees of the gym, Dolores Park is in a heavily lesbian enclave. An outdoor haven of another sort is found on seven acres in Golden Gate Park. The National AIDS Memorial Grove is a Mecca for those so deeply touched by the AIDS pandemic. A place of somber solitude, meditation, grief and, ultimately hope. A place both tragically beautiful and dramatically moving. |
