Keeping Austin Weird

"Keep Austin Weird" isn't just a catchy slogan made to incite curiosity and promote interest and business in Austin Texas but, is a true insight into the convention-defying and idiosyncratic nature of the city.

To discover the truly weird in Austin, get off the beaten path in an Austin charter bus. Board the bus and head toward the Congress Avenue Bridge to join the crowds that gather each night to watch the World's Largest Urban Bat Colony. Watch as 1.5 million Mexican free-tailed bats dine on a nightly feast of mosquitoes.

Measuring 12 ft. high and 17 ft. long and boasting a 9 ft. horn spread, the World's Largest Longhorn is made of fiberglass and calls Austin home.

A fitting tribute to a town that revels in its weirdness, is Steve Busti's Museum of the Weird. Home to a 3,000 year old mummy, a Fiji mermaid, a fortune telling machine, and live lizards, more than validates the museum's weird moniker. I might also add disturbing into its description with shrunken heads, a 2 headed cow, a frog with a full set of choppers, and the Cabinet of Curiosities which displays unusual photos such as the football team which every player has 6 fingers on each hand.

Hop back on your Austin charter bus as more weirdness awaits you on the outskirts of town. Home to a man-made collection of phenomena that the live in curators call ephemeral is The Museum of Ephemerata. Basically the idea is that all exhibits are either on loan, temporary, or impermanent. I would venture to guess that would make it difficult to recommend the exhibit of monstrosities as it may not be there when you arrive.

Last but, not least, a trip to Austin would be incomplete without paying homage to the piece d’ resistance of Austin’s weirdness, The Cathedral of Junk. This 2 story architectural wonder was constructed entirely from junk. The shrine of sorts, rising out of designer/builder Vince Hanneman’s back yard, finds visitors walking through or climbing its walls everyday, by appointment.

Climbing aboard your Austin charter bus for the journey home may have you pondering one of life's great mysteries, "What is "normal" anyway?"
